38 weeks

I’m 38 weeks today. We’ve ramped up our nesting in the past month. The nursery is almost complete, aside from some shelves that need hanging and a recliner that hasn’t been delivered yet. But, our baby has a place to sleep and diapers to wear and an endless supply of pink outfits. We’re ready. And so, so excited.
Yesterday we attended a marathon 8 hour childbirthing class. Kelly, the instructor, was one of the nurse practitioners that was instrumental in us getting pregnant as quickly as we did. She’s also a phenominal teacher, and made us feel a lot more confident about what will happen in the delivery, recovery, and post-partum process. Part of the class included her describing in detail what will happen when Alice arrives. At the end of the story I looked over and saw George wiping tears from his eyes. He told me later that he predicts he’ll be an emotional mess when she comes. Probably so. He’ll also be the most amazing dad.
I found out this week that its very likely that an epidural won’t work for me because I have a spinal fusion. It was a shock, but now I’m trying to prepare for a med-free birth. I just keep imagining my grandmother doing it four times and living through it. It’s definitely changed the picture that I had in my mind of how labor would go, but I am trying to keep a positive attitude and prepare as much as I can.
I’m ready, ready, ready. I keep asking Alice if maybe today will be the day she wants to come out, but no luck, yet. She’ll come when she’s ready, I realize. I just can’t wait to hold her in my arms.
